Robert E. Jannings, 90, of St. Joseph passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Lakeland Continuing Care Center in St. Joseph from complications caused by a stroke.

"Bob," as he was known by all who knew him well, was born June 9, 1917 in Owosso, Michigan, the youngest child of Elwood and Cynthia Jennings, both of whom preceded him in death.

Robert Jannings served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, stationed stateside in several transportation positions. While serving he was awarded medals for National Defense Service and Good Conduct. After his honorable discharge from the army, he and his family resided in St. Joseph.

Bob was a professional truck driver for over three decades, first as an owner-operator then with Associated Truck Lines where he retired in 1977. Thereafter he continued to work part-time well into his seventies, notably at the former Froehlich's Little Super (St. Joseph) and Duke's Ice House (Coloma), and at the YMCA. He leaves behind valued friends and acquaintances alike, especially those nurses and doctors who cared for him the last five years of his life.

We grandchildren share lasting memories of our grandfather that range from constant "puttering" around in his "library/workshop" (doing and building whatever), to family "road trips" to Mackinaw Island, Ionia, and Owosso. Because of his modesty, few people knew that he was an accomplished organist and harmonica player. During the holidays family members were treated to a wide array of upbeat folk and Christian songs that he learned from his father, mother, and older siblings as a child growing up in Owosso.

Bob was also an avid baseball fan and enjoyed spending time watching "his" beloved Detroit Tigers. When not reading from a stockpile of western novels penned by Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey, he enjoyed building model trains or traveling to Owosso to visit family and friends.

He leaves to cherish his memory a very special daughter-in-law, Judy (John) McClintock of Vicksburg; grandsons Harold D. (Patricia) Jannings, Jr. of Coloma; Christopher M. (Kathleen) Jannings of Benton Harbor, Kent (Theresa) Jannings of Schoolcraft, Rick Jannings of South Bend, and Jon (Jessica) Matthews of Kalamazoo; granddaughters, Bobbi (Rich) Edwards of Sodus, Danielle (Richard) Higgins of Jenison; seven great-grandchildren, Anthony, Sarah, Anna, Jessie, Stewart, Richard, and Nicholas; and a special nephew, Mr. Gordon (Rosemary) Jennings of Vernon, MI.

Those preceding him in death include his beloved wife Myrtle, three sons, Robert, Harold, Sr., and Kenneth Jannings, grandson John Jannings, great-granddaughter Madeline Anna Jannings, and eight brothers and sisters: Louis, Loren, Leon, Sylvia, Loretta, Goldwyn, Evelyn, and Tessable.
