Adalbert A. "Big Al" Janik, age 89, of Hammond, passed away on Wednesday, January 5,2005, at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sophie J. Nee Goverinski; two daughters, Sharon (Jerry) Pawlus of Highland, and Diana (Stephen Jr.) Kovecsi of Griffith; four grandchildren, Scott Pawlus, Erin Pawlus, Stephen Kovecsi III, and Danielle Kovecsi; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his sisters Josephine Sichak, Mary Tokarz, and Anna Polen, and brother, Michael Janik, Father Adam Janik, Mother Antoniette (nee Mlgonarski) Janik. Mass at St. Casimir Church with the Rev. William O'Toole and Rev. Theodore Mens Con-Celebrating. Entombment Holy Cross Mausoleum. Mr. Janik was a retired employee of Amoco, Whiting with 38 years of service. An army veteran of WWII. The VFW St. John Memorial Post 717 will conduct military services Sunday. "Big Al" enjoyed fishing, gardening, loved family gatherings at home, and visiting Our Lady of Angels Convent on Mishawaka, Indiana where he acquired a lot of friendships from the Sisters. He also was an avid Notre Dame "Irish" fan. "Go Irish" His love for his church and the Blessed Mother surrounded his life. Al was a very special husband, father, and grandfather and loved by many, who along with numerous friends, will miss him greatly. Til' we are together with you and God in paradise, "Thumps Up, Gramps!"
