Helen Louise Hayes was the daughter of Edward B and Lena Nora Case Hayes. Her father was a police officer and later a police detective in Kansas City, Missouri. He was shot a couple of times during his career.
When Helen was a young girl her mother became ill which put Helen in the role of responsibility for her siblings early on.
Helen married Melvin Vance Younger after she graduated from high school. They had four children. Larry, Richard (who died young), and twins Daniel and David. Helen and Melvin divorced and Helen worked several jobs to make ends meet.
She met Charles Walter "Walt" James and they married in 1949.
Walt adopted the twins and the couple later had their own two sons Charles Walter Jr. and Robert.
When the children were older Helen went back to school and became a nurse. She worked for the Visiting Nurses Association later in her career.
Walt and Helen were married for 49 years.

Funeral Service 10 am Tues. 50th and Ames Chapel. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. Visitation Mon. 6-8 pm. Memorials to Infinia Healthcare.
