Dr. William Bonner James, 63 years old, of Manhatten Beach, California, formerly of Joplin, and brother of Dr. Ed James and Dr. R. M. James of Joplin, died Saturday night in the veterans administrative hospital at Sawtell, California.
Born at Fayetteville, Arkansas, October 8, 1889, Dr. James was one of seven brothers, sons of J. D. and Mary L. James. He was a graduate of Joplin High School; the University of Missouri at Columbia, and received his medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
He entered the naval service in 1917 upon the United States entry into World War I and served during that conflict. After the war ended he transferred to the regular navy, serving 15 years. He was discharged in about 1933 because of physical disability with the rank of lieutenant commander. Dr. James was given special naval medical training during World War I at the naval academy at Annapolis, Md.
He was a member of the Masonic Blue lodge and the Scottish Rite bodies of Joplin, and the Christian Church.
He is the sixth of eight children to die, four brothers, Grover James, Harvey James, D. W. James, and H. T. James preceding him in death, and a sister, Mrs. Agnes Famuliner, all of Joplin.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in a chapel in the veterans administrative cemetery at Sawtell, and he will be accorded full military honors.
