Betty Jean James, 77, of Mayflower Crossing Apartments, Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Friday evening at the home of her daughter, Suzanne Francisco, in Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Sept. 16, 1931, in Wilkes-Barre, a daughter of the late Maurice and Elizabeth Phillips Wendel. Betty Jean was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School, Class of 1949. She owned and operated a beauty shop on South Meade Street in Wilkes-Barre for many years, and she was also employed by the Bell Telephone Company.
Mrs. James was a member of the First Welsh Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre, where she served as an Elder, Deacon and a member of its choir and cookie bakers.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert and Fred Wendel.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, John T. James; children Suzanne Francisco and her husband, Fred, Wilkes-Barre; Betsi Thomas, Wilkes-Barre; John T. James Jr. and his wife, Joyce, Bethlehem; Jacqueline Lee Legg and her husband, William, Pittston; grandchildren Amber Johnson, Tiffany DeAngelis, Fred Francisco, Casey Thomas, Rhiannon Legg and Jillian Rose James; great-grandchildren Ian, Jorden, Aidan, James, Niko and Cam; nephews and cousins
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the First Welsh Presbyterian Church, 74 S. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Scott Loomer, Pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Scranton, officiating. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call today, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Memorial donations may be made in Betty Jean's Memory to the CJD Foundation, PO Box 5312, Akron, Ohio 44334.
