David Randolph Jacobson, Wittenberg, passed away on Mar 13, 2011 at his winter home in Weslaco, Texas. He was born in Eland, WI on December 24, 1930, son of Lela Kasson Jacobson and Thurlow Randolph Jacobson. On Aug 15, 1953 he was united in marriage to Shirley Anne Tuffs of Wittenberg, WI.
He graduated from Wittenberg High School in 1949. David was very proud to have been a veteran of the Korean War, serving his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Army from 1951 to 1954. He received his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin River Falls in 1959 and his Master's Degree from Michigan State University in 1967. From 1959 until 1968 David taught high school in Montrose, MI, then moved to Denver for a year long internship in Highway Safety in Jefferson County, Colorado. From 1969 until his retirement in 1986, David was employed as a Consultant with the Connecticut State Department of Education in Hartford, CT for statewide Driver and Traffic Safety education programs. After retirement, he moved back to his hometown of Eland and since 2004 he has divided his time between his home in Eland and his winter home in Weslaco, TX.
David's passion and dedication to his home town plus his interest in genealogy fueled his travels to every area of the United States, visiting with distant family members and tracing his ancestry. His appreciation and pride in his grandparents' involvement with the Bethany Indian Mission of Wittenberg encouraged him to share his vast knowledge of that era with people from all over the state and throughout the country. He was proud to be a member of the Wittenberg Historical Society, was active in the Walls of Wittenberg, served the Bethany Cemetery association, was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wittenberg and was extremely proud of his involvement in the American Legion. David was a great competitor and truly enjoyed bowling and golfing. His smile and laughter was infectious and he will be remembered for his great sense of humor and gentle teasing ways. David truly believed that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible, and he lived that belief every day.
David is survived by his wife, Shirley Jacobson; daughter, Karen Jacobson Berndt (husband, Carl Berndt) of Baileys Harbor, WI, son, Steven Jacobson of Windsor, CT; three grandchildren, Sarah Thiel Hinrichs (husband, Lance Hinrichs) of Green Bay, WI, Chadwick Jacobson Thiel of Bonduel, WI and Tyler Jacobson Morgan of Atlanta, GA; one great grandson, Samuel Thiel Hinrichs; one sister, Patricia Sickler (husband, Larry Sickler) of Wittenberg, WI; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kristi Lee Jacobson Morgan; sister, Mary Ann Maahs (Donald Maahs, Wittenberg); sister, Constance Jacobson.
Interment will be in Bethany Cemetery at a later date.
