Funeral Today for Mrs. Burrows, 96, who Died Monday
Widow of Smith P. Burrows, 1880 Homesteader, Passes, Was born in 1847
Funeral rites are being held at the Frazier Mortuary chapel at 2:00 pm Thursday for Mrs. Emily Burrows, who died at her home in Ord at an early hour Monday morning. Only three weeks ago Mrs. Burrows observed the 96th anniversary of her birth in Bergen, Norway, which occurred on Febr. 24, 1847.
With her parents she came to America at the age of 13, landing in Quebec, Canada, and going from there to Richmond, Ill., in a covered wagon drawn by a team of oxen. Her marriage to Smith P. Burrows took place April 5, 1875.
The Burrows came to Valley county in 1880, settling on a homestead five miles south of Ord which remained their home until 1903 when they moved into town. Mr. Burrows died many years ago.
Born to them were six children, of whom two died in infancy. Survivors include Raymond and Guy Burrows, of Ord, Nettie, of Hastings, and John, of Cascade Locks, Ore. there are a number of grandchildren and other relatives.
Mrs. Burrows was a member of the G.A.R. Circle and was active in its work as long as her health permitted. In recent years it had been the custom for G.A.R. Ladies to help Mrs. Burrows observe her birthday each year, which custom was followed to the last. she was a member of the Lutheran church in girlhood but after coming to Nebraska became a member of the Methodist church where she continued until her death.
Though her later years brought failing eyesight Mrs. Burrows'general health was remarkably good until recently. She was a kind christian mother and a good neighbor and friend throughout her life and the funeral today will be largely attended.
