Nelda Jackson Holman
1926 ~ 2008
After well over a year of giving her family one more example of tenacity, commitment and courage in fighting advanced-stage lung cancer, Mom decided it was time to say goodbye for now and return to all those waiting for her. She "battled it to the end", just as promised and stood on her own two feet less than an hour before she passed away.
She was born to Bert and Emily Jane Jackson on November 6, 1926 in Nephi, Utah. She graduated from Juab High School and married Bruce Holman of Fountain Green. Together they had 7 children, Jerry, Patricia, Carol Ann, Diane, Steven, Kristine, and Scott. Mom was a professional homemaker and Dad greatly respected her abilities. He used to say that they "couldn't afford for her to have a job, cause she made too much money stretching the dollars at home." She was a talented seamstress and made beautiful clothes for her children. She loved crafts and crocheting, making beautiful dolls and afghans for every member of her family. Before scrap-booking was all the rage, she worked with Dad, Kris and Terry to create scrapbooks for all her children as a surprise Christmas gift. Talented in the kitchen, it wasn't a need to be exclusionary that kept her from freely giving you the recipe, but more often because the "recipe" was simply "dump and pour" until it tasted just right. A true chef.
Traditions and family events were Mom's reason for living. Every holiday was special and made with love including her Halloween chili, Valentine's cookies and a St. Patrick's Day feast that would make a leprechaun proud. She loved spending time in Scofield and having all the family around her there, especially on the Fourth and 24th of July when you could always count on her tradition of handing out boxes of Cracker Jack to everyone. "Don't you just love it here?" Yes, we do Mom and you'll always be there with us. Whenever we're playing a "kitar", making "succini" bread, or even just cleaning the "torlet" to the point of scrubbing the porcelain off, we will remember Mom and all she taught us.
She is survived by a wonderful family, including 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Everyone in the family contributed to her care over the past year in their own way. She loved them all as they did her, and to say she will be missed only begins to describe the heartbreak we all feel in losing her.
Funeral services for family and friends will be held at Noon, Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the Nibley Park Ward Chapel, 2450 South 600 East, Salt Lake City, and friends may call at 10:30am prior to services. Entombment will be at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
