Manning Lemuel Jackson Sr., 92, of Locust Grove died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Manning was born in Columbia, S.C., on Nov. 26, 1919. He was the oldest of the five children born to Eli and Lula Manning Jackson.
Manning was employed as a bookbinder and plate maker for the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. He retired from the bureau in 1984.
On Dec. 30, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, N.C., and served in World War II on the domestic front until 1946, when he was honorably discharged.
In 1944, he married the former Alberta Fambrough in Greensboro, N.C., and they became the parents of two children, Itashi (Tassie), born in 1945, and Manning Jr., born in 1948. He adopted and raised his first three grandchildren, Kysha, Sonya and Lena. They lived in Greensboro, N.C., Lewiston, Maine, District Heights, Md., and Locust Grove. He enjoyed fishing, camping and travel.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alberta Fambrough Jackson; daughter Tassie; son Manning Jr.; granddaughters Kysha Jackson and Sonya Jackson, both of Locust Grove, and Lena Jackson Giron of Los Angeles; eight additional grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; sister Cletus Jackson Stevenson of Greensboro, N.C.; brother Theodore S. Jackson of Temple Hills, Md.; five nieces; and eight nephews. His parents, sister Willie Mae J. Young; and brother Charles Jackson preceded him in death.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, at Lake of the Woods Church, Locust Grove, with Tom Shafer, senior pastor, officiating. A public viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Internment will be at 2 p.m in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
