Modest Jackson was born on April 14, 1920 in Tangipahoa, Louisiana. She was the daughter of the late Andrew Williams and Sally Louie. She attended the public schools in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, graduated from McKinley High School and attended Temple Business School.

On December 7, 1942, she married William Jackson, Jr. They relocated to California in 1947 and made their home in Berkeley. They had one treasured daughter, Camille Fay Jackson.

Modest joined Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Charles Warren. She was honored as a "Living Legend" by Taylor Church. She joined the Ruth Perrilliat Guild of UMW; Women's Day Captain. Mrs. Jackson taught Sunday school and worked and with youth at Taylor Memorial.

Mrs. Jackson was employed by the Berkeley Unified School District for Mrs. 28 years as a cook and baker before retiring in 1985. Mrs. Jackson was a member and past Matron 5 times for Princess Zorah #70, Order of the Eastern Star, PHRA.

Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, William Jackson, Jr; sister, Marie Kimble and brother, Eleece Thomas.

She is survived by her daughter, Camille Faye Jackson Cherry and her husband, William Cherry, Jr.; grandchildren:, William III, Oscarine and step-grandson, William Levon; nieces: Doris Jones, Gladys Ball, Helen
Prescott, Gerrie Guyse, Joyce Preston, Emelda James and Carol Byrd; nephews, H.P. Sterling and Ivory Joe Holden; special friend, Willie Armstrong; and a host of other relatives and friends.
