Evening News, Cumberland, Maryland, Friday, 1 Dec 1922-Last City Edition-Front Page: "CHILD FATALLY BURNED WHILE SAYING A PRAYER Nightie On Little Alice Jackson, Frostburg, Ignites From An Open Grate FLEES FROM MOTHER AND IS BADLY BURNED Victim With Brothers Had Just Returned From a Birthday Party In Her Honor Frostburg, Dec. 1-Her nightdress igniting as she knelt down to say her prayers in front of an open gas grate, at 10 o'clock last night in a bedroom of her home, Alice Jackson, Loo street, sustained such severe burns that she died at 8 o'clock this morning in the Miner's Hospital. It is supposed a sudden spurt of flames from the grate ignited the nightdress. Yesterday Was Birthday Yesterday was the little child's birthday and she, with her brother,Owen, aged nine, and two younger brothers, James and Paul, had been entertained at a birthday party, with cake and seven burning candles, at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson, Washington street. Mother on Lower Floor The children had returned home and while the mother was covering the stoves on the lower floor, the three children went up stairs to bed. Alice had come out in her nightdress to the gas grate, according to her brother Owen, when it suddenly caught fire. Entire Body Is Seared She ran screaming around the room and eluded her brother, Owen's effort to catch her. Mrs. Jackson attracted by the screams of her daughter, ran up stairs and endeavored with a blanket in her hands to wrap up the child and extinguish her blazing body. Before she could succeed in doing this, the frenzied little girl had run into another bedroom and was horribly scarred from knees to her head. The little girl was carried to Miners' Hospital a few minutes later. Besides her parents, the little girl is survived by three brothers, Owen, Paul and James. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Jackson, 316 Avirett avenue, Cumberland, are the grandparents of the dead child. The funeral will probably take place at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning, with burial in St.Michael's Catholic Cemetery."
According to her Certificate of Death, she was listed as dead at 7:00 am on December 1, 1922. Jacob Hafer was the undertaker, who handled the funeral arrangements. She was buried on December 2nd at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Frostburg, Md. Although there is no marker for her grave, her sister, Rita (Jackson) Thompson believes she was placed in the McDonald family plot of her maternal grandparents, among other relatives.
