Veteran Jerry Ives dies 2 weeks after returning from Honor Flight

KREM 2 has been partnering with Honor Flight to get local World War II veterans back to the memorial in Washington, D.C.. Sadly, veteran Jerry Ives died last Thursday just two weeks after returning from his Honor Flight trip.

Ives' death serves as a grim reminder that the clock is ticking for so many of these men and women who fought for our freedom.

Seaman First Class Jerry Ives was a simple man. Friends and family members say he was happy and humble with a mile-wide smile.

Ives finally saw the solemn memories of his overseas battle from World War II just two weeks ago. Long-time friend Larry Hayden says the Honor Flight was one of the greatest things that ever happened to Ives.

Doctors told Jerry he was okay to fly to on the Honor Flight, and donations from KREM 2 viewers helped Jerry and his daughter take the trip of a lifetime.

Jerry's family says it was the hope of Honor Flight that carried him through. They say he had surgery two days after returning from Washington, D.C. but it didn't go well. They say they know his season of life was nearing its end.

Friends and family members paid their respects at Jerry's funeral Wednesday to an American hero with a heart of gold.

The Honor Flight program says 14 veterans who were on the list to go to Washington, D.C. passed away before getting a chance to see the memorial that was built in their honor. They say four veterans were booked for flights but died within days of actually taking off.

Jerry's family members say they are happy he is no longer in pain. Jerry was 85 years old.
