Pioneer Citizen of Bowling Green, Passed Away After Seven Weeks' Illness --- Leaves Six Children
Mrs. Martha J Bates, one of the oldest and most respected of Bowling Green citizens, passed away this morning at eight o'clock at her home, No 418 South Summit street, after an illness with a grippe lasting seven weeks.
The time of the funeral has not yet been decided upon definitely but it will probably be Thursday afternoon.
Martha Jane Ireland was born in Maumee on August 19th, 1837, and was in her 76th year when she died. Her marriage to Reason Bates occurred at Waterville on January 26th, 1856. They came to Bowling Green 42 years ago and for forty years they dwelt here together until the death of Mr Bates two years ago this coming June. Mrs. Bates was unable for years to take an active part in social functions; but as a charter member of Wiley Relief Corps her valuable services had been recognized.
She was the mother of eight children. One died in infancy and her son William passed away a few years ago. She is survived by these six children. Mrs. Fred Ordway, Edward Bates, Eldred (Dick) Bates and Banche Bates, of Tulsa, Okla, and James Bates of Toledo.
M. A. Ireland, of this city, is a half-brother of the deceased and she also leaves three other half-brothers and a half-sister who live in the west.
