Elizabeth M. "Betty" Ireland, age 82, of Wabasha, died Sunday evening, January 18, 2009 at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Wabasha.
She was born July 11, 1926 in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of Rosco and Jessie (Deford) Selby. She married Thomas Ireland May 26, 1950 at Central Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. The family lived in the Afton area before moving to Wabasha in 1971.
Betty was an active member of the United Church of Christ in Wabasha. She was also very active in the White Shrine and the Eastern Star where she was a past Worthy Matron. She was also very active in the Wabasha community, having served as the office manager for the Three Rivers Community Action Council for several years. In that capacity she coordinated the Meals on Wheels Program and the Rides for Seniors Program. Betty was also a member of the Red Cross and the St. Elizabeth's Medical Center Auxiliary. She loved to knit, sew, and do craft work for her family and friends. Her greatest love was her family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her culinary passion was French toast with strawberries and whipped cream.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Ireland, Wabasha, MN; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and John Eversman, Kellogg, MN, Sharon and Jim Burrichter, Weeki Wachee, FL, Barb and John Hanson, Wabasha, MN; son and daughters-in-law, Jim and Karen Ireland, Reads Landing, MN, Karen Ireland, Roseville, MN; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. One son, Tom Ireland, one grandson, Anthony Burrichter, two great-grandsons, Wyatt and Danny Peterson, two brothers, Harold and Howard Selby and her parents, preceded her in death.
An Eastern Star Service will be held at 11:00am at the United Church of Christ in Wabasha followed by a celebration of Betty's life with the Reverend Lyle Krumrie officiating. Interment will be in St. Felix Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9am until the time of service. Memorials are preferred to the United Church of Christ.
The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of arrangements.
