Birth name was Ellen Ireland. She emigrated from Ireland when she was 10 y.o. She, her mother, three sisters, and one brother arrived in Saint Paul on 20 May, 1852. They joined her father who had come ahead of them in 1845. In September she was enrolled in Saint Joseph Academy and graduated in 1858 with one of the first classes. On the 8th of December, 1858 she received the habit of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, and thus began her long, illustrious career.
