Donald L. Ikerd, 86, of Hamilton, IL, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 8:55 AM at his home. He was born on March 28, 1927 in St. Joseph Hospital, Keokuk, to Homer and Leoma R. Barth Ikerd. He married Margaret Robinson on December 1, 1949 in Quincy, IL. She preceded him in death on August 31, 2010.
He is survived by one son: Michael Dean (Rita) Ikerd of Warsaw, IL; five grandchildren: Nicole (Doug) Meyers of Keokuk, IA, Dwayne Johnson of Hamilton, IL, Renee (Andrew) Whitaker of Keokuk, IA, Cory (Amy) Johnson of Carthage, IL; and Kylie (fiancÚ, Eric Nagel) Ikerd of Carthage, IL; three great grandchildren: Maggie Meyers, Aden Whitaker and Suzie Whitaker; and a brother: Homer Leon Ikerd of Dallas City, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter: Susan Ikerd Johnson on May 14, 2003, a son-in-law: Gene Johnson and a brother: Lester Ikerd.
Don attended grade schools in Hancock County, IL: Christy School south of Powellton, IL, Elvaston, IL and Niota, IL. He graduated from Dallas City High School in 1945. Donald was baptized and confirmed in Christ Lutheran Church, Nauvoo, IL. He enlisted in the US Army on July 18, 1945 and served through January, 1947. Of the 18 months, he served 12 months in Germany, Army of Occupation, 388th M.P. Battalion. He attended Gem City business College in Quincy, IL, graduating in 1948 with a Master of Accounts Degree and received an advanced accounting degree in 1950. Donald and his wife, Margaret moved to Hamilton in 1951. He had worked at white House Creamery from 1951 - 1962, at Tri-State Dairy 1962 - 1975, and at Sheller Globe, Keokuk, from 1976 until his retirement in 1988. The most important part of Don's life was his family and he loved the time he spent with them. He enjoyed playing pool and watching sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Bulls.
Services will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Lamporte - St. Clair Funeral Home of Hamilton with Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, IL.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2013 after 2:00 PM with the family meeting friends between 5:00 and 8:00 PM at Lamporte - St. Clair Funeral Home of Hamilton.
Memorials have been established for Hancock County Blessing Hospice.
