Mrs. Mattie Elizabeth Cookston, 82, was buried in the Jonesboro Cemetery Monday afternoon after succumbing Saturday night at her home in Winnfield. Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church in Winnfield by
the pastor, Rev. H. H. McBride, and Rev. Alwin Stokes, Presbyterian minister.
With the death of Mrs. Cookston one of the longest marriages for Winnfield was broken. She was married to J. H. Cookston sixty-six years ago and they have resided in Winnfield for the past thirey years.
Mrs. Cookston was born at Green [sic Greene] County, Arkansas, and moved with her parents
to Mississippi where she was reared and married. After moving to Louisiana in 1900 she and Mrs. Cookston resided in Jonesboro, Chatham, and Winnfield. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnfield.
Surviving are her husband, J. H. Cookston of Winnfield; one daughter, Mrs. G. W. DeLaughter of Sparkman, Arkansas; one son, Lt. Commander Roy Cookston, U.S. Navy, serving somewhere in the Pacific, a former resident of Alexandria.
Preceding her in death were two sons, W. C. Cookston, Sr., a long time resident of Winnfield, and Charlie Cookston, who died when an infant, and one daughter, Ivy Cookston, who died in infancy.
The deceased is also survived by one sister, Mrs. W. W. Smith, of Dawson, Texas, eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Pallbearers at the funeral were L. J. Thomas, P. K. Abel, J. F. Lovell, J. C. Sandifer, Bryant Sholars, and Matt Milam, all of Winnfield.
