Vernell "Aunt Nell" Ijames was born in Davie County July 16, 1911 daughter of the late James and Bessie Hudson Ijames. She attended Davie County Schools, and at an early age she joined Liberty A.M.E. Zion Church.
She was first married to Lorenzo Maxwell who preceded her in death. Later she married James Barger who also preceded her in death.
In 1984 Vernell and her husband were added to Redland Church of Christ, where she attended until her health failed.
Aunt Nell was a homemaker, and even though she had no children by birth, she was a mother to all the children in the community. A nephew, Eugene Roseboro, was raised in her home, and several other relatives were cared for by her.
She was gifted to do crochet and she also enjoyed growing
beautiful flower gardens.
In addition to both husbands, she was preceded in death by nine siblings.
On Monday, April 7, 2008 she died in Rowan Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
She is survived by one sister, Berlie White of Cooleemee; a large number of devoted and loving nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
