Mae Lillian Bawks, age 83, of Pickford, Michigan, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey, Michigan.
The former Mae Huyck was born May 27, 1926 to Floyd Hamilton Huyck and Hattie May (O'Brien) Huyck. Mae was a lifelong resident of Pickford. She graduated from Pickford High School in 1944.
On May 2, 1945, she married Dean Moylan Bawks and they built their home 3 1/4 miles south of Pickford on M-129 where they raised their three sons. Mae worked as a bookkeeper for her brother at Frank Huyck Trucking for 40 years. She also worked at the Village Inn Restaurant for 11 years and part time for Stiling Accounting for several years. Mae enjoyed her grandchildren very much and also the time she spent with her neighbors. Mae was a very active member of the Pickford United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club, Northwoods Christian Camp, and the Pickford Area Historical Society.
Mae Bawks was survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Sharon Bawks of Pickford, Jerry and Cindy Bawks of Perry, Michigan, and Bruce and Glenda Bawks of Bowie, Maryland; eight grandchildren, Jason (Brittany), Amy, Lindsay, Kyle (Sarah), Joel (Rachel), Kreg, David, and Rachel Bawks; and four great grandchildren, Elyse, Blake, Nathanael, and Carter Bawks. Also surviving are one brother, Vern (Mary Lynn) Huyck of Pickford; two sisters, Cora (Bob) Holly of San Jose, California, and Elaine Lawary of Quincy, Illinois; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Dean in 1997; brothers, Frank Huyck (2004), Melvin Huyck (1941), and infant brothers, Roy and Duane; sisters, Violet Earl (2005) and Hazel Markstrom (1957); and infant granddaughter, Laura Sue Bawks.
