Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Dakota Huse was killed in combat in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on 9 Nov 2010. He was a 2009 graduate of Huntington High School, Shreveport, La. He was in Junior ROTC all four years and excelled in sports, especially wrestling and soccer. He joined the Marines because he wished to serve and protect his nation and its people. The family will be receiving friends for visitation Friday, November 19, 2010 at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home from the hours of 5-9 p.m.
Dakota Ray Huse was born December 3, 1990 in Shreveport, LA and went to join his Paw-Paw, November 9, 2010 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan due to injuries sustained from an IED while on foot patrol. Dakota sacrificed unselfishly by serving our grateful nation as a U.S. Marine. "Ooh Rah"
Dakota was a happy child always wanting to be outside with his pawpaw. My dad was able to teach him so much about tools, collecting and how to build things. It was a bond the two of them shared better than most could. Anytime there was something to be done outside, Dakota was the first one up and outside. As a teen he was like most kids, riding bikes being the daredevil with his brother; be it, skateboarding, jumping ditches or just building things out of nothing. Having his aunt Melinda and his Paw-Paw always teaching him something ... Could have been, how to use something or to drive, they seemed to always enjoy time with him. His aunt Melinda was someone he easily was able to talk to or confide in. They had a very special bond. Dakota had a special place in his heart for his grandma they laughed , joked and she always made sure she cooked his favorites ... He was her doughboy an she was his Shamu ... He and His brother were very close Dusty took care of Dakota teaching him how to wrestle and how to get the girls and they were as if best friends instead of brothers none the less anywhere one went the other was sure to be found. Dakota even spent time with his sisters, as a kid would show them how to dance and what music to listen to and how to skate or how to ride bikes and make bonfires and how to grill when he's not home. He and His brother were very close. Dakota took life as it came to him he was a hard working, dependable and seemed to have a thirst for knowledge. Reading was his downtime activity. He Loved the Harry Potter Books and Lord of the Rings, lastly he was on his way to finishing the Percy Jackson series. During his time in School he had many friends and was always involved in activities. He was in the Tops programs, in high school he played soccer, wrestled, and was quite dedicated, as his last years in school became more academically challenged by joining , interact, science club and student council, where he took many yearly trips with others and always came back with tons of pictures and friends he made. Dakota took a week during the end of school to a camp and was so happy he made so many new friends... His senior year I think was his busiest time of all... He went to school full time and decided to join the Marine Corps and during this time he was as a DEP ( delayed Entrance program ) and worked a full schedule there was hardly any time for socializing but I promise you that didn't stop Dakota. If he couldn't get to his friends, they always seemed to get to him and come home with us. Dakota never met anyone he didn't like right away. He was caring, compassionate and dedicated to his family. He always made sure his head was held high and never let anything hold him back. No matter how busy life had him he never complained and he always made sure his sisters, brother and as well as his nephew was always cared for. Dakota had so many friends, seemed everyday he was saying " Momma meet so and so " there now adopted family .. I swear today still I feel my kids are never just my own. Dakota was loved and cherished by so many. I wish as I sit here now could describe what I want this to say but there aren't any ... All I can say is this ... To look in his eyes you saw straight into his soul with his touch you were welcomed to his Embrace and with his Words you were held captive to the sounds of the wonder of his charm. I say this because... Dakota was everything, not just to me but too many people. He is and will always be my baby, My Marine and the Man I always knew he could be. I just now have the privilege to say I have a Guardian Angel to watch over me and his siblings. We love him without time and distance, without question or doubt and we love him forever till we meet again.
Dakota was welcomed in Heaven by his Paw-Paw; Henry Huse Jr. Left to cherish Dakota's memories and tell share his story will be his mother, Donna Huse; maternal grandmother, Diane Huse; three sisters: Lesley (L.J.) Donnell, Samantha (Sam) Donnell and Sabrina (Bug) Donnell; one brother, Dusty Huse; three aunts: Melinda Huse, Melissa Huse and Tami Vergo; one nephew, Kaleb Arnold; two extended brothers: Javoris Hinton and Christopher Cagle, along with numerous extended family members and many devoted friends.
Dakota will always be remembered as a kind, gentle, and giving soul. During Hurricane Katrina, Dakota and his family volunteered at the Hirsch Coliseum to bring support and comfort to those in need at a time of desperate measures.
The family has requested memorials be made in Dakota's honor to Toys for Tots, St. Jude's, or charity of donor's choice.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the U.S. Marines, and 1st Sgt. Donald for the Dignity, Care, and Compassion shown Dakota and his family in their time of need. A special thanks to Huntington High School for all they have done in remembering Dakota.
