"Nellye 'Jo' Gordon, of Austin, passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 in Austin...."

"Nellye 'Jo' Gordon was born in Granger, Texas to Daisy Lee Cleveland Hurt and Gabriel Louis Hurt on December 5, 1926. Mrs. Gordon professed her belief in Jesus Christ at an early age at the St. Love All Baptist Church in Granger. For many years, she was a member of Saint Paul Baptist Church in San Angelo where she served as church clerk, Sunday school teacher and choir member. She remained a member of St. Paul until moving to Austin and joining Greater Mt. Zion (GMZ) Baptist Church. Following in the footsteps of her older brother, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Tillotson College in Austin, where she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Incorporated, Beta Kappa chapter. She continued her education and obtained a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. She completed post-graduate studies in Ogden Utah, Mexico City, and the University of Texas at Austin. She met the love of her life, John T. Gordon, and they married on August 12, 1950. Their union was blessed with the birth of their only child, Brenda Jo. Her career in education began in San Angelo, Texas, where she taught in local elementary, middle, and high schools and lasted for over 30 years. At the time of retirement, she was a high school guidance counselor. She had a deep passion for teaching and touching the lives of young people. Mrs. Gordon also had a special love for her community and social services. While in San Angelo, she was a founding organizer and president of the Le Coterie, as well as other social and community service organizations such the Rosary Reading and Arts Club. She was a member of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Capital City Chapter and a Golden member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Beta Psi Omega Chapter. At GMZ, she served in the Mission II (Circle One) auxiliary. Mrs. Gordon is preceded in death by her parents Daisy and Gabriel, and brother Thomas. She is survived by husband John, daughter Brenda, of Austin, Texas sisters Mary Patterson, of Austin, Vivian Carthorne, of Georgetown, Texas and Melissa Booker (Nathaniel), of Austin; grandchildren Jeffrey Gordon Salisbery of Austin and Jari Lynn Salisbery of San Antonio, Texas; great-Grandchild Braylon Jarin Jean of San Antonio; and a host of family and friends."
