He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 29 August 1914 and embarked from Adelaide for overseas aboard HMAT "Ascanius" (A11) on 20 October 1914. He died of wounds received in action at the 1st South African General Hospital, Abbeville, France, aged 35 years.
