Dorothy Louise (Hunt) Sass was born July 14, 1935 to Dale E. Hunt and Ruth Carenia (Dawson) Hunt at the home on the farm in Malvern, Iowa. She was baptized as a baby at the Methodist Church in Wales, Iowa. Dorothy attended Wales Lincoln Consolidated Schools from 1-12, where she graduated in May 1953. Dorothy was the 4th child of 6.
During her school years, Dorothy played basketball. She was one of only 2 girls in the history of the school to play varsity in the 8th grade and lettering all 5 years. She started out as a guard and moved to a forward, playing 6 on 6.
Dorothy moved to Omaha at the age of 18 in 1953, where she lived in an apartment with 3 other girls and worked at Mutual of Omaha.
Dorothy Hunt and Roland Sass were married on February 4, 1956. They moved to Bennington, Nebraska where they raised their 4 children: Gale, Ginger, Glorie, and Ganene.
Dorothy continued to work at Mutual of Omaha until becoming pregnant with Ginger. In Bennington, she worked for Witte Implement, Sportsman's Bar for Merle and Mimi Mason, then working at the Bank of Bennington for Harold and Jerry Roe.
In 1967, Dorothy started keeping the books for Sass Trucking until present. During this time, she also studied to be a travel agent, and went to work at True Travel for several years. After that, she went to work at Occidental & Loan in Elkhorn, Nebraska.
Dorothy did service at St. John's Church; she was on the stewardship committee, music and worship committee, and taught bible school. Dorothy was also on the Bennington's Women's Club, helped organize the Bennington Women's Fire and Rescue Auxiliary, belonged to the "Girlie Club" and was active on the PTA.
Dorothy and Rollie lived their entire 55 years of married life in Bennington, Nebraska. They were blessed with 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Dorothy loved spending time with her family and attending as many events as possible. She was an excellent artisan. She sewed beautiful clothes for herself as well as all of her kids while growing up. Dorothy also made fabulous jewelry and crocheted many afghans as gifts.
Dorothy had an infectious laugh; you couldn't help but smile or laugh along when you heard it. She could talk to anyone. If you were lucky enough to have her as a friend, you knew you had a true one.
Mom will be severely missed, but anyone who knew her can truly say that heaven is a much happier place, and maybe even a little louder with her fabulous laughter.
