ROGERSVILLE - Ressie Evalene Hunley Britton, age 83, Rogersville died Saturday, October 1, 2005 at Wellmont Hawkins County Memorial Hospital.
She was a life-long resident of Hawkins County. She was a member of Rogersville United Methodist Church. She performed volunteer work at church, Scouts, school and civic duties. She and the late Dr. Joe Chambers started the first Visual Perception Program in the state at Rogersville City School. She was employed as a vocational coordinator at Helping Hands (Chip Hale Center), Rogersville. She also worked with the Pink Ladies at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital and participated with the mobile blood bank. She was well known during high school and the 1940s as an outstanding basketball player averaging slightly under 40 points per game. She amassed a total of 837 points during her senior year in high school.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin Dee and Geneva D. Hunley; husband, Noah D. Britton, Jr.; five sisters and twin brothers.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Noah David Britton, III, wife, Charlotte and granddaughters, Jennifer and Amy; daughter, Mary Ellen Smartt, husband, Dr. William H. Smartt and grandchildren, Ethan and Abby; sisters, Helen Davis, Kingsport and Jodie Trent, Rogersville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 3, 2005 at Christian-Sells Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Harrison officiating. Graveside services were held Tuesday in Highland Cemetery. Christian-Sells Funeral home, Rogersville was in charge of arrangements.
