Dr. Harry C. Huneycutt, 79, died September 28, of unexpected heart problems following an elk hunting trip with his son. We are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of this active, vibrant man whom we predicted would out live us all.

Dr. Huneycutt was born to Lucille and Harry Huneycutt, in Norton, Virginia. He spent hours combing the Appalachian Mountains, which fostered his love of the great outdoors. He graduated from Norton High School where, in his senior year, he helped lead the football team to their state championship. Dr. Huneycutt was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute. He completed his medical degree and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical School. He served as a Military Physician in Germany from 1967-1970. After completing his military service, he made Reno his permanent home.

Dr. Huneycutt devoted his life to the practice of medicine, evidenced by his leadership, continual education, mentoring of students, and utilization of expert techniques. He delivered over 5,000 babies during his 43 years of caring for patients here in Reno. When he wasn't working, he could be found spending time with his family, traveling, or enjoying himself on the golf course.

Dr Huneycutt was an avid Wolf Pack fan and rarely missed a game. He was repeatedly recognized for his continued support and contributions to the UNR Athletics Department. He and his wife, Rita, annually sponsored the Academic Excellence Scholarship Banquet for our UNR athletic students. They were lead supporters for the Athletic Academic Center. As recognition for their years of support, Drs. Harry and Rita Huneycutt received the distinguished Jake Lawlor Award given at the 2011 Governor's Dinner. Dr. Huneycutt was a member of various community organizations including the Prospector's Club and the Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Huneycutt is survived by his wife, Dr. Rita Huneycutt; his children: Sherry Huebner, David Huneycutt (Anella), Alyson Huneycutt, Carrie Huneycutt, Dr. Kim Luikart (Bill); his grandchildren: Dr. Marissa Huebner (Zao Naegele), Erika Huebner, Lauren Huneycutt, Jake Huneycutt, Rita Luikart, Jackson Luikart; and his sister, Nancy Maxwell (Jim). He is now joining his youngest son Joseph Kenneth Huneycutt, who passed away the summer of 2010. Ken's wife, Terry Huneycutt, is now living in Hawaii.

Dr. Harry Huneycutt's years of service and devotion to excellence will be fondly remembered. He will be dearly missed by his patients, his friends and colleagues, and most especially, by his large, loving family.
