COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY – 09/06/1978
A 31-year-old truck driver was killed and another man was injured in a truck-car collision on US 42 at the Jefferson Freeway at 7 a.m. yesterday. David L. Humphrey, of 4108 Sea Wave Court, was pinned in the cab of the tractor and died of multiple injuries before he could be freed, county police spokesman Bob Yates said. County police and Harrods Creek volunteer firemen worked for more than 30 minutes to free Humphrey's body, Yates said. David O. Durham, 36, of 13315 Creekview Road, driver of the automobile, suffered a head injury and was taken to Suburban Hospital. His condition was listed as satisfactory last night. According to Yates, the accident occurred when Durham, traveling south on US 42, tried to turn left onto the freeway in front of Humphrey's truck. Humphrey's rig, headed north, struck the right front of Durham's car, Yates said, and Humphrey apparently lost control of the vehicle. The semi trailer ran off the right side of the road and the tractor crashed into a rock ledge, Yates said. No charges were filed. Yates said the trailer, loaded with meat, is owned by Winn-Dixie Food Stores. Humphrey was of veteran of the Vietnam War and had been a truck driver at Winn-Dixie for eight years. Survivors include his wife, the former Linda Wyatt; two sons, David L. Jr., and Mark A. Humphrey; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hobert Humphrey. Visitation at Embry-Bosse Funeral Home, 2723 Preston Highway, will be after 7 p.m. today.
