Mary E. Armfield, 96, Decatur, Indiana, died at 10:40 a.m. Monday, December 26, 2005, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
She was born July 29, 1909, in Jay County, Indiana a daughter of John W. and Minnie C. Bright Hummer. She married Merrill C. Armfield March 17, 1935. He died June 11, 1969.
She graduated in 1929 from Poling High School in Jay County and in 1932 from Marion College Normal School. She received her bachelor of science degree from Marion College in 1957.
Mrs. Armfield, a former resident of Huntington, Indiana, taught in Huntington County for 31 years, retiring in 1975. She also taught one year in Jay County and two years in Adams County. She was a member of the Indiana and Huntington Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the national and local American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). She was a past president, secretary, board director and insurance representative for the AARP and was an alternate delegate to the national convention in 1982. She had volunteered at the Senior Center and Bowen Center in Huntington and the World Missionary Press and the Enterprise for Emmanuel.
Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary M. Grandstaff, a brother, Herbert "Leo" Hummer, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Brancie E. Hummer, W. Francis Hummer, Vernon R. Hummer and Clifford K. Hummer.
