Lois Marie Biechler lost her battle with breast cancer on Saturday, August 30, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield with her family by her side.
Lois was born, the first of ten children to Hilary and Marie (Krall) Hughes, in Marshfield November 7, 1937. She graduated from Stratford High School. She continued her education at St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Marshfield and became a Registered Nurse in 1958. She married Carl G. Biechler on February 7, 1959 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stratford. He preceded her in death in 1992. While raising five children Lois worked full time as a Registered Nurse. During her nursing career at St. Joseph's Hospital she worked as a Surgical Nurse, was Head Nurse in the Emergency Room, and after attending UW Madison she became a licensed Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She worked at the Marshfield Clinic located on Central Avenue and moved with the Pediatrics Department to its current location. She most recently held a nursing position at Golden Living Center -Three Oaks in Marshfield.
In 1978 Lois saw a need in the community for quality child care and opened a home day care that grew into Child Care Centers of Marshfield, Inc. She was visionary in her belief that all children deserved quality care away from home. Her nursing background allowed her to care for those children who were sick as well as those children who had unique needs. Lois was extraordinary in her dedication to child care issues in the state of Wisconsin, serving on state-wide child care boards, attaining funding for food programs for home day cares, initiating infant care education for care providers, and championing the rights of children and families. In the 1990's she also opened a Community Based Residential Facility called Willow House where she and her staff cared for geriatric clients.
Not only did Lois work hard outside the home for others, she truly enjoyed time spent at home with her family. One would be hard-pressed to find Lois sitting idle. From sewing and cooking, to gardening and spending time outdoors she lived life to the fullest. She also enjoyed reading, photography, and hobby farming. Lois was involved in Altrusa, Investment Club and foster care. She was a member at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Halder where she was a Eucharistic minister and liturgist. Lois will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched. We will always be inspired by her spirit of giving and her passion for life.
She is survived by her husband, Dwight Collins whom she married in 1999 and their adopted son Jacque; her five children, Thomas (Teresa) Biechler of Apple Valley MN and their children Carlee and Mark; Jane (Matthew) Feuerstein of Madison and their children Allison and Jacob; Patricia (Russell) Stauber of Marshfield and their children Elizabeth, Alexander, Emmanuel & Gabrielle; Susan (Michael) Wilkerson of Poynette and their children Hannah, Chloe and Ava Jane; and Daniel (Christine) Biechler of Stevens Point and their children Carl and Zachary.
