Francis Monroe Hughes, 69, of North Charleston, a self-employed landlord, died Friday at a local nursing home. The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in Stuhr's North Area Chapel. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Hughes was born in Charleston, a son of Harold M. Hughes and Kathleen Johnson Hughes. A former engraver for The News and Courier, he served in the Air Force and was a member of Dorchester Lodge #369 AFM. He was a member of Remount Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Patsy W. Hughes; two daughters, Pamela H. Fowler of Goose Creek and Emma H. Plate of North Charleston; a son, Dr. Francis Hughes Jr. of Charlotte; a sister, June W. Reynolds of Charleston; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
