SGT Hughes was killed in action in the Tay Ninh Province of Vietnam in June 1969. John Hughes was a native of Phoenix and was the son of Maricopa County Superior Court Justice Ed Hughes. Hughes graduated from Camelback High School in 1964. He attended Phoenix College for two years before enrolling at Arizona State University. During his senior year in 1968, Hughes joined the Army. SGT Hughes was an infantryman with C Company of 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry of the 25th Infantry Division. He was a dedicated soldier as he was wounded during his tour of duty in Vietnam and would return to duty two weeks later. He had also won Soldier of the Month honors in his company in April 1969. SGT Hughes was awarded two Bronze Star Medals and two Purple Hearts.
