Nelson Goodwin Hughes, 69, of 1776 New White Hill Road, died
Thursday (Feb 1, 2001) at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.
He was born Feb 10, 1931, at Albemarle County, a son of Lewis Forrest and
Susie Higginbotham Hughes.
He was a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church and had been employed by DuPont
until his retirement in 1985 with 37 years of service. He graduated in 1948
as valedictorian from Rockfish Valley High School. He was an accomplished
guitarist and enjoyed playing country music.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son David Nelson Hughes; six
brothers and a siseter.
Survivors include his wife Frances Lowery Hughes; two daughters and sons-in-
law children, Amanda and George Dunning of Stuarts Draft, Sharon and Mike Estes
of Lyndhurst; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph R. Hughes of Waynesboro and
Stephen and Lynette Hughes of Arlington; a sister Susie Hughes Mawyer of Faber;
11 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Ridgeview Baptist Church by
the Rev. Don McClure, with burial at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Hickman, Muzon Folk, Jonny Crawford, Kenneth Dunn,
Jim Roark, Herbert Hughes and Bob Campbell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Willis, Lewis Price, Ronnie Ritchie and
John Perdue.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
