James Stephen "Steve" Hughes, 64, of Charlottesville passed away quietly at his home on Thursday, February 28, 2008, after a short, brave bout with cancer.
Born December 8, 1943, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late James A. Hughes and Ella Morris Hughes Herndon.
Steve leaves to cherish his memory his wife of over 23 years, Sue Critzer Hughes; his daughter, Valerie Hughes; his sister, Charlotte Napier and her husband, Bobbie; two nephews, a niece and their families. "The Big Person" will be missed by his dog, Z. Many other relatives and friends will miss him as well.
Steve had a great passion for life and for everything that was part of it. He never did anything half way. At Lane High School he lettered in football, basketball, and track.
He attended East Carolina University on a football scholarship. His love of football started on his father's lap at University of Virginia games. Throughout his life he was an avid supporter of University of Virginia football and basketball. He expressed his love of University of Virginia sports saying he bled orange from one arm and blue from the other. Steve's love for football extended to the Washington Redskins. Late in life Steve took up the sport of golf which he played every time he could even into his last days. He watched golf and NASCAR races whenever they were on television.
Those who knew Steve will have their own memories about his passions in and for life. Cherish those!
At his request, "I don't want any--well, many flowers.
