DUNCAN, Thelma Gladys, was born at her grandmother's home in Elizabethton, Tennessee on March 13, 1911. She entered into the arms of the Lord at age 98, on January 29, 2010 in Tucson, Arizona. Her parents were Walter and Florence Croy Hughes. Thelma attended Range Elementary School and graduated with honors from Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee. She attended East Tennessee State Teachers College for one year and then because of the Great Depression she had to quit school and get a job. She began teaching elementary school in a small two room school in Roan Mountain, Tennessee. She met her first husband, Christy McKinney in Roan Mountain and they had two children, Iris and John. Christy McKinney passed away in 1956 and Thelma moved to Tucson to be near her brother. In Tucson, Thelma married Robert Duncan and they spent many years involved with church work and gardening. Robert Duncan passed away in 1999. Thelma is survived by brothers, Jack (Elizabeth) Hughes, Walter Eugene (Ruby) Hughes, Bob (Alma) Hughes, of Watauga, Tennessee; and sister, Pansy (George) Sichler of Los Lunas, New Mexico. Surviving children, Iris (James) Notestine, Tucson, Arizona, John (Barbara) McKinney, Fairfax, California; grandchildren, Mark (Dorothy) Allen, Queen Creek, Arizona, Suzanne Christi (David) Thomas, Tucson, Arizona, and Max McKinney, Fairfax, California; great-grandchildren, Daniel (Amber) Allen, and Michelle Christy Allen, Phoenix, Arizona; and great-great-grandchildren, Kayden, and Cameron, and Rylee Grace Allen. Thelma's family wishes to thank her friends and church family for all their love and fellowship. We would also like to thank her caregiver, Angela Rubio of El Dorado Hills Care Home, for her love and kindness. A Celebration of Life will be held in early Spring.
