John Huffman was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Sarah (Hartman) Huffman. John was the youngest of eleven children.

His siblings were: Peter Huffman, b. January 29 1823; Leah (Huffman) Householder, b. March 10, 1825; Henry Benjamin Huffman, b. June 1826; Jacob Huffman, b. January 7, 1827; William James Huffman, b. August 5 1829; Eliza (Huffman) Greenly, b. April 9 1831; James Edward Huffman, b. April 12 1833; Mary A. (Huffman) McCoy, b. May 14 1835; Sarah Huffman, b. February 22, 1838; Howard Huffman, b. May 26 1840; and of course, John Huffman himself, b. June 25 1842.

John married Sarah Catherine Himelright on November 14, 1875. To this union eight children were born. Henry O. Huffman, b. August 16 1876; Josephine Cloe Huffman, b. November 11, 1877; William Edward Huffman, b. February 10, 1879; Iness Iona (Huffman) Knight, b. November 18, 1880; Carl Vern Huffman, b. March 28, 1882; Mary Elizabeth (Huffman) Newell, b. February 12, 1884; Grace Mary (Huffman) Washburn, b.July 4 1886; and Sarah Elizabeth Huffman, b. May 21 1888.

Regimental History:
The 6th was organized at Indianapolis in April, 1861, as a three months regiment, and was mustered in on April 25, 1861. It was mustered out at Indianapolis on August 2, 1861.

It left the state May 30, for West Virginia, and reached Philippi June 2. It participated in the first battle of the war at that place June 3, and was attached to Gen. T. A. Morris' brigade. It was also in the engagement at Carrick's Ford.
