On July 7, 1944 the 783rd Bomb Squadron, 465 Bombardment Group, were flying B-24 Liberators on a mission to bomb the Blechhammer Oil Refinery at Kessel, Germany. This particular bomber was shot down. Five crewman were killed and five taken Prisoners of War.
