British Rear-Admiral. In 1757, about the age of 25 years, Hudson was promoted to lieutenant in the British Navy, serving aboard the sloop Porcupine. In 1762 he was promoted to commander, and served aboard the sloop Peggy and the Vulture, of 14 guns, before being promoted again in 1765, to captain. He first served aboard the Deal Castle, of 20 guns, and in 1775 sailed for North America aboard the 32-gun frigate, Orpheus. The Orpheus was destroyed in 1778, in Rhode Island, to avoid capture by the Americans and French. Hudson returned to England for a short time before sailing again for North America aboard the 32-gun Richmond frigate in 1779. He took part in the siege of Charleston, SC, in early 1780, receiving accolades from his commander. Hudson was captured by the French during the Battle of the Chesapeake in September 1781 and returned to England as soon as he was exchanged. He cruised the Irish Channel during peacetime aboard the 31-gun Venus frigate, from 1783-6. In 1793, Hudson was given the rank and half-pay of rear-admiral, though he is not known to have held any other commands.
