Frances Edith Johnson Hudson, 91, of McGregor, Texas, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, with her family by her side. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 19, at First United Methodist Church, 500 South Madison in McGregor. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at The Main Place, 315 South Main Street in McGregor. For those desiring, a shuttle will be provided from the church. Private interment will be in McGregor Cemetery under the direction of Cole Funeral Home in McGregor. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cole Funeral Home.
Frances was born in McGregor, Texas, to the late Norman and Ruby (Wilson) Johnson. A lifelong McGregor resident, Frances was a 1935 graduate of McGregor High School. At age 16, she began a career as a piano teacher that lasted until she was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. She also taught music in a private pre-school. She was pianist for the McGregor High School choir and provided music for many celebrations, including graduations, style shows, weddings, funerals, and numerous other events.
On Nov. 21, 1936, she married John Hugh Hudson in Marlin. Following their marriage, they lived in McGregor. In 1960, they moved into John's family home which was built by Dr. H.H. Hudson in 1905. Throughout her life, Frances was a member of Sixth and Adams Church of Christ and attended Bible Study Fellowship in Waco for seven years. When she visited Linda in College Station, she attended Friends Congregational Church and while visiting Joan in Denton, she attended Denton Bible Church.
Frances was truly an active McGregor citizen. She was one of the founding members of the McGregor EMS in 1978 and served as secretary for 30 years. When the McGregor Lion's Club was founded in 1952, she provided beautiful music as pianist for their meetings and functions. In 1987, she became the Lion's Club first female member. In 2001, she served as president and has held numerous offices and served on many committees through the years. She served on the Council of Governments Area 8 Agency on Aging, the McLennan County Cancer Board and the State Wide Advisory Board for Texas A&M University Opera and Performing Arts Society. Frances has received many honors for her worthwhile endeavors, including KWTX Golden Apple Award, Bluebonnet Council of Girl Scouts Women of Distinction, Sons of Herman Humanitarian Award and McGregor Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.
Frances found enjoyment being around people and her many friends in multiple social settings, including Beta Sigma Phi, Hugs, Tiara, Birthday and Breakfast Group, Red Hat Society, Book Club and many other organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John, on Aug. 1, 1997; brothers, Norman, Oscar and Edwin Johnson; and her sister, Camille Phillips.
Survivors include daughters, Joan Roberts and husband, Dr. Jim Roberts, of Denton, and Dr. Linda Parrish and husband, Dr. Paul Parrish, of College Station; grandchildren, Christi Nies and husband, Paul, Courtney Roberson and husband, Max, Paige Herron and husband, Eddie, Kyle Roberts and wife, Meredith, Marc Parrish and wife, Dianne, and Gavin Parrish; great-grandchildren, Caleb Nies and wife, Kleesy, Hailey Nies, Isiah Nies, Hunter Roberson, Summer Roberson, Ashley Herron, Josh Herron, Addison Roberts, Meghan Roberts, Ella Frances Roberts and Alex Parrish; and many other relatives and friends.
