In 1854 John Huddleston married Nancy Gum and together they settled on land five miles northwest of Alton, MO along the old Thomasville Road and became part of the Royal Oak community, on a 640 acre land grant. They became the parents of seven children.
John was a successful farmer.
The Huddleston Cemetery was established when their daughter Artemitia 'Mishie' Josephine (Huddleston) Braswell died and was buried on the farm.
