Thurman James Hubbard, Sr
Birth: Mar. 20, 1917
Cumberland County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Mar. 2, 1987
Forsyth County
North Carolina, USA

Thurman James Hubbard, Sr. was the eldest surviving child of Willie and Carrie Hubbard. He was born on March 20, 1917, in Cumberland County, NC. The Willie Hubbard family was a fairly typical farming family and it can be safely assumed that Thurman spent many hours working alongside his father in the fields of the family farm.

Thurman Hubbard attended school up to the ninth grade.

Thurman served in the U. S. Army, in Panama, from May 26, 1938 to August 13, 1940.

Upon leaving the army, Thurman returned to his family home in Stedman, NC where he later married Ms. Lillian Maria Beazley. They settled in Fayetteville, NC, where Thurman worked at the Veterans Hospital as a cook and meat cutter.

During their time in Fayetteville, two sons were born: Thurman James Hubbard, Jr. (a.k.a. Jim) and Robert Leslie Hubbard (a.k.a. Bobby). The boys were born sixteen months apart.

While the boys were still very young, Thurman, Lillian, and Ms. Jennie Beazley (Lillian's mother, a.k.a. Granny) moved to Winston-Salem, NC. For a time Thurman worked for the V.A. Hospital as he had in Fayetteville. Later, he and Lillian operated a small neighborhood grocery store.

In 1957 Thurman and Lillian produced their last child, Jeffrey Lee Hubbard.

Sometime after moving to Winston-Salem, Thurman began building houses, and became fairly prosperous. Thurman built houses for many years until deteriorating health forced him to stop. He spent his remaining years in the work force performing maintenance on his brother's rental properties.

Thurman spent much of his spare time fishing and working in his garden. Late in his life he also became much more involved with Unity Baptist Church and was eventually appointed a Deacon, one of the proudest moments of his life.

Sometime early 1985, Thurman was diagnosed with lung cancer. After more than 19 months of treatments and medications, the cancer finally won and Thurman died on the evening of March 2, 1987.

As of this writing there are four generations named Thurman James Hubbard.
