Farmville, Virginia,
"THE FARMVILLE HERALD" OCTOBER 22, 1916,
BOY KILLED BY TRAIN:
Standing on One Track Watching a Freight Train, Is Run Down by Another.
DISTRESSING ACCIDENT HAPPENS AT PROSPECT.
Force of the Blow broke many Bones in the Body of the Boy.
Prospect, VA., Oct 22.-Willie Hubbard, aged fourteen, son of Mr. Samuel Hubbard, a farmer of Elam, Prince Edward County, was instantly killed yesterday afternoon at Prospect depot, on the Norfolk and Western.
The boy had gone to Prospect to purchase school supplies and before starting for home walked to the depot where he stood on the east-bound track watching a west-bound freight train pass. Before he was aware, No. 4 fast Passenger train, came along the track on which he was standing.
The force with which he was struck by the engine broke many of his bones and threw the body to the side, death being instantaneous.
It was an awful shock to the community and a crushing blow to the family. He was a fine boy, a member of Olive Branch Sunday School, and had joined the church in August. The funeral was conducted this afternoon by his pastor Rev. J. M. Greene. A vast concourse of people attended.
A remarkable coincidence that some years ago another son of the family met death by accident. The little fellow, just ten years of age, went to play on a straw stack and by some inexplicable cause had a wire wrapped about his neck and before assistance could be rendered choked to death.

*Obituary used the name Willie, however his name is John R. Perhaps Willie is a nickname.
