Victoria Hoyer Bortnem was born on June 22, 1915 in Clay County, South Dakota the daughter of Gustav and Johanna (Norder) Hoyer. She died on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at the Brookings Hospital at the age of 92 years.
Victoria was baptized in 1915, confirmed in 1927, and married in 1938, all at Dalesburg Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD. She attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and General Beadle in Madison, SD. Victoria taught rural school in McPherson County in 1936, Lake County in 1937 and again in the 1960's. She also taught for the Volga Christian School in the 1960's. She moved with her husband from the farm in Lake County to Volga in 1989, and to Brookings in April of 2000. She was a resident of Brookview Manor since November 2005.
Victoria had been a member of the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church since her marriage, and her many church activities included Sunday School superintendent, teacher, leader of women's groups, director of ladies chorus, junior choir, and many Christmas pageants. She wrote and directed the first, and many more, of the Advent programs at Lake Campbell for Sunday School students. She enjoyed conversation, coffee time, stitching, her family times, picking wildflowers and lots of laughter.
She is survived by her children Yvonne Franseen (Bob) of Breezy Point, MN, Veronna Capone (John) of Brookings, SD, Paul Bortnem (Rosine) of Arlington, MN; four grandchildren, Peter Bortnem (Kristin), Rebekah Lundstrom (Mark), David Franseen (Heather Murphy), Chris Franseen (Andrea); and five great grandchildren, Ella Lundstrom, Jens Lundstrom, Damien Franseen, Maeson Franseen and Soren Bortnem.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, four sisters, and a nephew.
