A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the Thirty-Second Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Third Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Battery A, and Coastal Artillery Corps with his rank listed as "Mechanic". His serial number was 725137; next of kin was his father, Fred A Hoy of 1219 East Broadway, Monmouth, Illinois. He was inducted into the army on 1 April 1918. He sailed from New York City on 8 August 1918 aboard the "RMS Empress of Russia", which had been recalled to service for the second time during the war by the British Admiralty to transport American troops to Europe. Their destination was Brest, France. Passenger manifests state he boarded the battleship USS Kansas (BB-21) on 28 December 1918 at Paris, France, arriving back stateside in early 1919. His obituary stated he received an honorable discharge on 27 January 1919, two and a half months after the war's conclusion.
Ralph married Emma Catherine Reed on 26 February 1931 in Monmouth. He died suddenly of a heart attack at 2:30 am at home, Sunday 20 March 1949. He was survived by his wife, 3 brothers, and a sister, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He had been associated in the carpentry business with his cousin, Fred Clyde "Ted" Hoy.
(Personal note - my mother often told me how crushed she was by the sudden death of her uncle Ralph. She remained close to her aunt Em until Emma's passing in 1992. She introduced me to aunt Em a number of times at church. She told me I was a dead ringer for her uncle Ralph; looking at this photo, I agree.)

Gravesite Details
Military headstone application, signed by his widow, stated Ralph was to receive a flat granite marker. It appears however he received a flat marble marker instead.
