"Dr. Jonathan A.C. Hower, for many years a prominent druggist of Martinsburg, died at his home there on Tuesday, aged 84 years. He was a native of Clearspring, and was graduated from the Baltimore Medical College in 1852 and practiced his profession in Natchez, Miss. For 12 years before removing to Martinsburg in 1874. He was a deputy sheriff for several years and later engaged in the drug business which he followed for 33 years, until two years ago, when he retired from active business. He was a Mason of high rank. He is survived by these nieces: Mrs. Mary Rhodes, Williamsport; Mrs. Virginia Wolf and Miss Lydia Pike, the latter making their home with their uncle."
Full name may have been Jonathan Anthony Castle Hower.

Another source reflects he received his M.D. at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in 1854.
Druggist in the St. Clair Hotel, Martinsburg, West Virginia, beginning ca. 1874, and later in the Grand Central Hotel, Martinsburg.
"An indictment was brought against Dr. J.A.C. Hower, druggist, of Martinsburg, on the charge of selling liquor without a license and on a Sunday. Dr. Hower is also about 70 years old." - Cumberland Evening Times, April 18, 1906.
