Children are indeed a blessing from God. The excitement at feeling that first movement in the womb; the wonder of new life as you examine your newborn, counting all the fingers and toes; the joy of that moment when he first grabs hold of your finger; watching his growing wonder with everything around him, and trying to make sure nothing can harm him as he gets into everything.
The thought of losing a child is unthinkable for a parent, but the unthinkable happened. While reeling from the shock of losing his 2-year-old sister, Dorothy, to influenza and pneumonia, Homer's parents lost him to the same disease. He was only 10 months old, but only a parent knows just how much life can happen in just 10 months.
The funeral notice appeared in The Atlanta Constitution and read as follows:
HOWELL--HOWELL--The friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Howell, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Howell and Mrs. Wheeler Lowery are invited to attend the funeral of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Howell's infant son, Homer, and their little daughter, Dorothy, this (Monday) afternoon, March 1, 1920, at 2 o'clock from Howell's cemetery. Funeral party leaving at 1 o'clock from the residence, 177 Luckie street. Awtry & Lowndes Co., funeral directors, in charge.
After the funeral The Atlanta Constitution ran the following article:
