Betty Hart, 74, of Burlington, died at 6:25 p.m. Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born Thursday, Feb. 1, 1934 in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Joseph Franklin and Florence Mildred Cloud Howell.
Betty was a registered nurse for the Ft. Madison State Penitentiary and the Mt. Pleasant Correctional facility. She retired in 2001. She was a 1952 graduate of Fort Madison High School. She was a member of Parkside First Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Virgil M. (wife Kathleen) Hart Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Doug (wife Jacqui) Hart of West Branch and Brad (wife Carla) Hart of Ft. Madison; six daughters, Mary Kathryn (husband Gary) Talbott of Burlington, Susan (Robert Gantz) Hart of West Burlington, Valerie (Paul Merkes) Canby of Peosta, Lori (husband Kevin) Levins of Wilton, Tami (husband Dallas) Maddox of Red Wing , Minn. and Betty Hart Jr. of Burlington; 27 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild due in December; one brother, Joy (wife Lois) C. Howell of Rock Island and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson and one brother.
At her request, her body has been cremated.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Parkside First Baptist Church. The Memorial Service for Betty will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9 at the Parkside First Baptist Church, with Pastor Marshall Jackman officiating. Interment will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural Keokuk. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Parkside First Baptist Church.
