The excitement a mother feels with the first movement of a child in the womb, the wonderment when the child is born and first latches on to your finger, watching the personality start to show through, the wonderment of discovery, the joy of taking those first steps. For a parent, the loss of a child is the worst nightmare immaginable, a place most of us cannot go.
Dorothy was only 2 years of age when she came down with influenza. Her mother, sister, and brother were sick with the same illness. She died on Friday, February 27, 1920, in a private hospital in Atlanta. The death certificate listed cause of death "influenza and pneumonia".
Several articles appeared in the paper concerning the death. Mortuary listing and Funeral Notice appeared in Saturday's paper, the latter setting the funeral for Sunday afternoon at 3 pm, inviting friends to attend.
The funeral, however, did not take place on Sunday as planned. On Sunday, Dorothy's 10-month-old brother, Clarence Homer Howell, passed away from influenza. The funeral notice read as follows:
HOWELL--HOWELL--The friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Howell, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Howell and Mrs. Wheeler Lowery are invited to attend the funeral of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Howell's infant son, Homer, and their little daughter, Dorothy, this (Monday) afternoon, March 1, 1920, at 2 o'clock from Howell's cemetery. Funeral party leaving at 1 o'clock from the residence, 177 Luckie street. Awtry & Lowndes Co., funeral directors, in charge.
The following article appeared in the paper after the funeral:
