Twin Slaying Victims Are Laid To Rest
The bodies of 17-year-old Brenda Lou Fraley Howard and her husband of 25 days, Donald Ray Howard, 20,were laid to rest Saturday afternoon in Rose Hill Burial Park. An overflowing crowd of approximately 450 filled the South Ashland Methodist Church as joint funeral services were conducted by the Rev. A.R. Perkins of South Ashland Methodist and the Rev. Ray Russell of the Beech Street Christian Church.
In a prayer, the Rev. Perkins told the group which included families of both Brenda Lou and Donald, many friends, and curiosity seekers, that the deaths of the young couple should stand as a memorial for rededication of the spirit to Christ. The Rev. Russell read a brief obituary of Brenda Lou and Donald and conducted a short prayer.
Meanwhile, Kentucky State Police reported they are "still up against a stone wall" in regards to clues or suspects concerning the Wednesday night shooting. Donald Ray, of Kenova, was found shot to death early Thursday morning in a parked auto on a remote county road one-half mile off Skyline Drive. Brenda Lou was still alive in the auto when found by two fisherman but died several hours later at Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Both died of bullet wounds to the head. Donald Ray was shot twice, once in the chest, and Brenda Lou was shot three times. One of the bullets struck her in the jaw and the other grazed her lip. At the funeral, several members of the local state police post were present in plain clothes, looking for a possible lead or suspect.
Brenda Lou was a senior and honor student at Ashland High School. Donald Ray was a 1960 graduate of Kenova High School and was employed by Bechtel Corp. prime contractor on the Big Sandy plant of the Kentucky Power Co., near Louisa. The couple were married Feb 17 at Louisa.
