Mary Ruth Craig was born August 16th, 1893 in Jonathan Creek Twp, Moultrie County, Illinois, a daughter of James Buchanan Craig and his wife Millie Solomon Craig. Mary's mother died in 1915. Mary was married to George W. Ritchey in 1919. He was also born in Moultrie County, but had moved west in the early 1900's along with his parents and younger siblings. George was several years older than Mary having been born in 1875. George had spent his youth traveling and working all kinds of jobs. In 1900 at the age of 25, he was found living with his cousin John W. Rippey in St. Louis and working as a packer. By 1910, he was living in Monida, Montana and working as a paper-hanger, but later that year was working as a cook in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. George was also musically talented, and worked as an entertainer in vaudeville. Directly after their marriage in 1919, George and Mary moved to Portland, Oregon where George worked driving a mail truck. He was shown as owning their home on Gladstone Ave. By 1925, they had moved back to Illinois, living in Decatur (or Arthur?) where their 2 daughters were born: Patricia Ellen born in 1925, and Marianna born in 1929. By 1930, they had gone to live with Mary's widowed and aging father James Craig in Arthur, Illinois where George worked as a shoe salesman.
By 1935, the couple had separated. George wanted to leave Illinois and move back out west, and Mary wanted a more stable life for their 2 daughers in her hometown of Arthur. By 1935, George had moved to Colby, Kansas and by 1940, he was living in Idaho Falls, Idaho working as a clerk in a hardware store. Mary continued to live at her father's home caring for both him and her 2 daughters. George stayed in various places out west, finally settling in Centralia, Washington in 1950 where his brother James and sister Olive had settled with their families.
George died in 1970 at the age of 95. Mary was remarried late in life in 1974 to a widower Charles Barton Howard whose wife had died the year before. He and Mary lived in Decatur until his death in 1977. Mary died in 1984 and was buried in the Arthur Cemetery.
