MR. HOWARD

VALLEY -- Mr. James H. Howard, 76, of Valley died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at U.A.B. Hospital in Birmingham.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Langdale United Methodist Church in Valley with the Revs. Mike Stonbraker and Bill Williams and Mr. Paul Meadows officiating. Burial followed in Langdale Cemetery in Valley.

Mr. Howard is survived by his wife, Doris L. Howard of Valley; his niece, Jo Anne Marler of Phenix City; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Born Dec. 29, 1922, in LaGrange, Ga., Mr. Howard was a member of the Langdale United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the official board and the Fellodian Sunday school class. Mr. Howard retired as a buyer in the Purchasing Department of WestPoint Stevens Corporate Office. He was a member of WestPoint Stevens Fifty Year Club. Mr. Howard was a member of the Valley Masonic Lodge #516 and the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy. Mr. Howard was the son of the late Sudie White Howard and John Howard.

The following biographical sketch was presented when Mr. Howard was inducted into the WestPoint Stevens Fifty Year Club: James H. Howard was born on Dec. 29, 1923, in LaGrange, Ga. He came to work with the Company on Aug. 23, 1939, as a bobbin Boy in the Spinning Department at Shawmut Mill in Shawmut, Ala. He became a Filling Doffer in Twisting at Shawmut in August 1940 and transferred in August 1943 to Langdale Mill, Langdale, Ala., as a Spinning Doffer -- his job until leaving for service in the U.S. Navy in May 1944. Following military service, he returned to Shawmut Mill in January 1946 and served briefly as a Brander Learner, first in the Wool Department, then in the Cotton Department until January 1947, when he became a Brander in the Cloth Department. In June 1949, he transferred to Lantuck Mill in Fairfax, Ala., where he was successively a Slitter Operator, a Calendar Operator, an Impregnator Operator and a Trainee until January 1957, when he became a Shift Supervisor there. He served in this capacity in the Lantuck Finishing Department until January 1960, in the Web-Forming Department until January 1963, and in the Finishing again until January 1969, when he became Overseer of that department. Mr. Howard became Technical Supervisor of Lantuck's Developmental Lab in December 1976, and in October 1978, moved to Corporate Offices in West Point, Ga., as a Buyer in the Purchasing Department -- his job when he retired in August 1990. Mr. Howard's mother, father and wife have all worked for the Company. He is a member of Langdale United Methodist Church in the Langdale community of Valley, Ala. -- as well as Langdale Methodist Men's Club, the American Legion, Valley Masonic Lodge and Riverside Country Club. His hobbies include golf and travel.

Memorials may be made to the Langdale United Methodist Church Family Life Center in memory of Mr. Howard.
