HELEN CHECK, (nee HOVAN) 85 - of Wildwood Crest, went peacefully in her sleep at Crest Haven Nursing Home on November 1, 2012. She was born in Perth Amboy, N. J. to Slovak- American parents and could speak fluent Slovak.

Helen loved entertaining, both domestically and onstage, and was never at a loss for an audience or a houseful of people. She loved to cook for her family and friends and was noted for her ethnic dishes and cookies, especially at the holidays.

Playing the lead in "Junior Miss" at Perth Amboy High, where she graduated in 1943, left Helen with a lifelong passion for the stage, and she worked with many of the top theater companies in Central New Jersey, most notably in summer stock at Foothills Playhouse in Middlesex for many years. In the early 1970's, when she first relocated to Wildwood Crest, Helen co-founded and produced shows for the Cape Crest Players at the Crest Pier. She also served as Drama Chairman for the Wildwood Civic Club. And she kept right on singing throughout all her years of nursing home care. Helen also enjoyed sales and was a top Avon Representative for over 30 years, and managed several gift shops in motels and on the Wildwood Boardwalk.

She loved going to the beach with her granddaughters, trips to Myrtle Beach, reading, and celebrating Christmas. New York City was also a favorite place, having worked there as a secretary for Squibb and Co. when she was young ; many years of auditioning and vocal training; and studying acting with Uta Hagan at H.B. Studios.

Helen was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Edward, and is survived by three children, David of Rio Grande, Mimi Wheaton ( Mark) of West Chester, Pa., and Dan ( Donna ) of the Villas ; three grandchildren Megan Duncan ( Tom), Kylene, and Jennifer; and many in-laws, nephews, and nieces.

Friends may call to celebrate Helen's life on November 10, 2012 at the Ingersoll-Greenwood Funeral Home, 1201 Central Ave., N. Wildwood, where a viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 am and service at 11:00 am.

Interment will follow at Cold Spring Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made toward Hurricane Sandy Relief at your local American Red Cross.
